Our Space and Collection

You'll will feel right at home, surrounded by the most eclectic collection of Chicago-crafted books, newspapers, magazines, comics, zines, artist books, journals, plans, novels, chapbooks, and cookbooks. Our 1,600 square foot space with two unique rooms has been called “cozy and welcoming” by the Chicago Reader, and yet can easily accommodate board & staff retreats, meetings, readings, rehearsals, performances, parties, meetups, and more. It’s also an ideal backdrop for film and television projects or intimate, unique weddings.

Amenities, Accessibility, and Catering

Designed to be flexible, most of our furniture folds or can be moved out entirely to customize your experience. We can accommodate up to 80 with seating and 99 standing/mingling. Our space is wheelchair accessible and offers two gender neutral restrooms. We are committed to creating safe and accessible spaces and will work to accommodate the needs of your group.

Amenities include air conditioning, fireplace, 2 large whiteboards, projector, back porch & yard, 2 folding conference tables, ~60 chairs, 23 folding chairs with desks, mini fridge, and microwave. While Read/Write Library does not offer food and beverage packages, you are welcome to contract with your own caterer who may use our catering compliant small kitchen, or encourage your guests to BYOB.

About Read Write Library

Read/Write Library collects, preserves, and provides access to community media in order to inspire and promote diverse modes of cultural production and civic engagement. We strive to raise the visibility of work produced by Chicagoans of all backgrounds in order to reveal connective threads across neighborhoods, generations, and cultures and to encourage inquiry into and ownership of the historical record. The Library recognizes the contributions that all community members make to co-creating a city and believes that learning to value these stories plays a vital role in building empathy, community pride, and the ability to see oneself as a change agent.

Hours Of Operation Available for rental Monday-Thurs 8am-10pm; Friday-Sun 8am-1pm, 5pm-11pm (early bird and night owl rates available if rental needs to begin earlier or extend later). We are open to the public Friday, Saturday and Sunday 1-5pm
Rental Policy Rental period begins when you arrive and leave (for instance, if you need to come early to set up/stay longer to pack up), not when your event is running. We're happy to work with you to on flexible timing, but it's helpful to know if this will be necessary in advance. Rate includes one rental assistant to provide access and help you move furniture to set up and reset the room back to the library. Additional personnel available for an additional rate. If you would like to clean up after yourself, then there is no cleaning fee. If you would like us to take care of it, then there is a $300 fee. Liability insurance required on a case-by-case basis for public events.
Cancellation Policy For a full refund, events must be canceled two weeks in advance. We can refund 50% with one weeks' notice. No refunds will be given within one week except in a case-by-case basis for emergencies.
